The Drovers Dream

G C G One night while droving sheep, my companions lay asleep, G D There was not a star to illuminate the sky; G C G I was dreaming I suppose for my eyes were nearly closed C G When a very strange procession passed me by. C G First there came a kangaroo, with his swag of blankets blue, D A dingo ran beside him for a mate; G C G They were travelling mighty fast, but they shouted as they passed N.C. G “We'll have to jog along, it's getting late.” C D G C G The pelican and the crane, they came in from off the plain, D To amuse the company with a Highland fling; G C G And the dear old bandicoot played the tune upon his flute, D G C G And the native bears sat round all in a ring. C G Then the possum and the crow sang a song of long ago, D And the frill-necked lizard listened with a smile; D C G And the emu standing near, with his claw behind his ear N.C. Said the funniest thing I've heard for quite a while. G C G Some frogs from out the swamp where the atmosphere is damp, D Came bouncing in and sat upon some stones; G C G They each unrolled their swags and produced from little bags D G The violin, the banjo and the bones. C G D G C G D G C G The goanna and the snake and the adder wide awake D With the alligator danced the Soldier's Joy; G C G In the spreading silky oak then the jackass cracked a joke, D G And the magpie sang The Wild Colonial Boy. C D G G C G Some brolgas darted out from the tea-trees all about, D And performed a set of Lancers very well; G C G The parrot green and blue gave the orchestra its cue D G To strike up The Old Log Cabin in the Dell. C G G G I was dreaming, I suppose, of these entertaining shows, D But it never crossed my mind I was asleep G C G Till the boss beneath the cart woke me up with such a start N.C. Yelling: “Dreamy, where the hell are all the sheep?” G D D
