The whole song can be finger picked and lends itself to the 'clawhammer' style of picking, where your thumb is playing an alternating bassline whilst your fingers pick out a melody on the higher strings. I've tabbed out how you could play the verse using this picking style but feel free to experiment. I appreciate some people may not be familiar with clawhammer but it's worth persevering with as it can create a really lovely, lilting, melodic sound and a thumb pick can help bring out the bass a little more if you so wish. I also try and put an extra note in here and there as I move to the next chord to try and link the changes together e.g. the '2' on the A string as you move from Am to C, a bit like running up or down into chords when strumming. Another thing I often do when playing in this style is if I have to hold down an F major shape, rather than use the full barre chord, I'll use my thumb to play the 6th string. For me, this makes it easier to link the Dm and F by playing the open 6th string and then just wrapping your thumb over as you place your other fingers for the F chord.
