D# G# D# He was just a lonely tortoise looking for a home D# F7 A#7 His tiny feet were blistered with the miles he had to roam D# I found him in a pet shop G# D# On his cheek there was a tear D# And painted on his little back F7 A#7 D# Was 20 pence to clear G# He's a faithful friend a tortoise D# A#7 He'll love you till the end D# G# A#7 D# And you won't need a person with a tortoise for a friend D# G# D# I took him from the petshop, tied to a piece of string D# F7 A#7 I'm sure that he was happy for I thoght I heard him sing D# G# D# I took him to my sports car, we had manys the mile to go D# F7 A#7 D# I tied him to the bumper, he was grateful for the tow D# In winter he would hibernate G# D# Yes, we'd both retire D# And when his little feet, his tiny feet, got cold F7 A#7 I'd place him on the fire D# In summer by the swimming pool G# D# I was so proud of him D# I'd throw him in, and then he'd sink F7 A#7 D# I don't think that he could swim D# G# D# Then came the day that's coming to all creatures great and small D# F7 A#7 A drunken driver hit my friend, he smashed him against a wall D# G# D# When I arrived all I could find were little bits of shell D# F7 A#7 D# I made them into plectrums, I know my plectrums well
