G F The lights went out in New York Am D7 Then they went out in Goshen G F Em I got stuck in Goshen and that was sad G F The townsolf stared hard Am D Like their minds had been marred G F Em By life in a district so downtrodden and drab A C G F I flagged down a stranger Am D In a worn wooden wheelchair G F Em And when I asked if he knew of a hotel G F He said "if I get your meaning Am D Then I'm definitely leaning G F Em Towards recommending the Farmer's Hotel." A C G F As I left to find the place Am D A mother loooked me in the face G F Em And whispered "please sir, not the Farmer's Hotel." G F Once where I was headed Am D She swore I would regret it G F Em Though what might happen she wouldn't foretell A C G F The old place it was vicious Am D Wicked and pernicious G F Em "Please stay clean of that rank abbatoir" G F Though her words alarmed me Am D I was stuck until morning G F Em And in the end we must be who we are A C G F With no light on the door Am D I wasn't quite sure G F Em If a night clerk was working within G F From behind a red curtain Am D Limped a perilous person G F Em He appeared to have some egg on his chin A C G F This old yankee warlock Am D Brushed back a gray forelock G F Em And bid me to sign in the book G F With no bonhomie Am D He proffered the key G F Em Never once did he give me a look A C G F I thanked the old codger Am D And in my role as the lodger G F Em I headed upstairs for to sleep G F There was no air of slumber Am D The doors, they had no numbers G F Em Which room was intended for me?
