Prelude
In 1941, a ship called the SS Politican, bound for Jamaica,
ran aground in the Sea of the Hebrides off the coast of Scotland.
Along with many of her contents, hundreds of bottles of whisky
were salvaged by the inhabitants of the nearby island of Eriskay.
The bottles were hidden in various places around the island,
to avoid discovery by the Customs Department,
which "objected" to the islanders' initiative.
In recent years, one was found buried in a peat bog,
and put on display in the island's lone pub, named Politician.
This song is about that bottle.
C
It was so long ago
F G
I can hardly remember the day that we left
Am
My brothers and I
G
Stowed away from the light
F
In the hold
G
In the cold
Am F
We tossed in the cool wind and winter storm
F G
And just when we thought we'd be lost to the sea
Am
We were carried away
F
I was given to thee
F G
And you kept me safe for all of those years
Am F
You kept me hidden down there in the dark
F G
And now that I'm gone I wonder if you
Am
Still remember me

C
It's been years since you left
F G
But still I remember the day that you came
Am
It just you and I
G
Together side by side
F
And I'd hold you
G
In the cold
Am F
I kept you from cool winds and winter storms
F G
But one day they came and took you away
Am
Now you're on a shelf
F
Are you lonely up there by yourself?
F G
'Cause I kept you safe for all of those years
Am F
I kept you hidden down here in the dark
F G
And now that you're gone I wonder if you
Am
Still remember me
