A D E7 A A On the top shelf in the closet, D E7 A In the workshop where he spent his extra time D E7 A Was a dusty wooden box that I had never noticed till that night D A And we set on the table and carefully, we opened up the top E7 And stared into the memory A Daddy kept inside the box D There was a letter from mamma, when she went out to Reno A To help her sister out in 62 E7 And a flower from Hawaii, when they went on vacation A It was the first time that my Daddy ever flew D And the pocket knife I gave to him on Fathers day A Years ago, I thought it had been lost E7 We all thought his heart was made from solid rock A D E7 A But that was long before we found the box A D A I guess we always knew it but “I love you” was hard for him to say D E7 A Some men show it easy and some just never seem to find the way D A But that night I began to see the softer side of someone I had lost E7 A I saw the love he kept inside the first time we opened up the box D There was a picture that was taken, when he and Mom were dating A Standing by his 1944, E7 And the faded leather Bible, he got when he was baptised A I guess no one understood him like the Lord D And the poem that he had written, about his wife and children A The tender words he spoke were quite a shock E7 We all thought his heart was made of solid rock A But that was long before we found the box E7 We all thought his heart was made of solid rock A D E7 A Yes that was long before we found the box
