G The whole thing started cause it looked like fun C Other people had a dog, I'm going to get me one (I said) G D Have a little friend around the place G So I went to the pet store down the street C And lying in the middle of a canine heap G D G Was a sleepy little puppy with a quiet sort of a face   G The next few weeks were certainly strange C Between the barking and thinking up of names G D Old Blue he wasn't, and Spot didn't really apply G So I settled for Harry, just because C That's how he is, that's how he was G D G And that's how the house gets more and more as days go by   G C G G D G C G G D G   G For a time I was careful where I sat C The rug got funky and he chewed up my hat G D And it still happens once in a while when he gets mad G But it's been pretty even, after all C I've taught him what I know about playing ball G D G And he's helped me get rid of a lot of stuff I used to have G Sometimes friends drop by for a couple of beers C And we'd all sit around and take turns rubbing his ears G D And calling him, it's been that way since he was a pup G C And he sleeps on the bed, and when I turn over, he turns over G D G And I turn over and he turns over and I turn over and we get up   G C G G D G C G G D G G As my life keeps moving through the different conditions C The big changes come with the slightest decisions G D And you're in for a surprise when you think you've got it figured I've found G Cause who'd ever thought I'd dote on a pet C But looking back now, I seem to forget G D G How I filled up my time before my dog was around   G C G G D G C G G D G
